Battery Replacement in a Watch

A watch stopping unexpectedly can be frustrating, but in most cases, a simple battery replacement is all that’s needed to get it running again. However, there are a few things to keep in mind before attempting to change the battery yourself.

When Does a Watch Battery Need Replacing?

Most quartz watches run on a small button-cell battery that lasts between 1-3 years, depending on usage and the type of movement. Signs that your watch battery might need replacing include:

  • The watch has stopped completely.
  • The second hand moves in jumps (on some models, this is a low-battery warning).
  • The digital display is fading or unresponsive.

Ignoring a dead battery for too long can be risky. Over time, an exhausted battery may leak, releasing corrosive chemicals that can damage the movement—or even render the watch irreparable.

DIY or Professional watch battery replacement?

While it might be tempting to change the battery yourself, it’s not always the best idea. Many modern watches have tightly sealed cases to ensure water resistance, and opening them without the right tools can lead to damage. Additionally, using the wrong battery type or improper handling can cause internal issues.

A professional watch repair service ensures:

  • The correct battery type is used.
  • The watch case is properly resealed to maintain water resistance.
  • The movement is checked for any other potential issues.
  • Old batteries are safely removed to prevent leakage and damage.

How Long Does a Battery Change Take?

In most cases, a watch battery replacement is a quick process, often done within minutes at a watch repair shop. Some high-end or water-resistant watches may require additional sealing or pressure testing, which can take a bit longer.

Conclusion

A dead watch battery doesn’t mean the end of your timepiece. With a proper replacement—preferably by a professional—you can extend your watch’s life and ensure it keeps running smoothly. If your watch has stopped, consider taking it to a reputable service center to get it checked and fitted with a fresh battery before any potential damage occurs.

Once a battery is depleted or near depletion, it can start to leak, releasing corrosive liquid that may erode, damage, or even destroy the movement. To avoid this, bring your watch to us as soon as possible for a battery replacement—don’t let it sit in a drawer or on a shelf unused. A simple battery change can keep your watch functional instead of turning it into just another forgotten item.
